Searsport – The MaineDOT and the Maine Port Authority are taking delivery of the largest marine crane in the state this weekend.

A specialty heavy lift transport vessel is expected to arrive Friday morning at about 9:00am with the partially assembled crane located on its weather deck. Transfer of the crane and all its components is expected to begin Saturday morning and be completed by nightfall.

The crane was purchased with funds from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program, a competitive grant program of the US Department of Transportation. The port of Searsport was awarded $7 million, with $4.2 million dedicated toward the purchase of this crane.

The crane, a Liebherr LHM 550, has a 144 metric ton lift capacity and will increase the Port of Searsport’s heavy lift ability.

The specialty crane will increase the port’s efficiency for throughput of bulk materials while increasing its capacity for handling heavy lift project cargo such as transformers, paper making machines and wind turbine components.

The crane will be owned by the State of Maine and operated by Sprague Operating Resources, operators of the Mack Point terminal in Searsport.
